MOS Burger's 'bunless' lettuce burger (Jan 2017)

MOS Burger is always a decent place to eat. (In my humble, gluttonous opinion.) Most of their burgers have bolognese-style tomato and onion sauce in them, which makes a great dip for fries.

I'd never tried a burger from their 'natsumi' range before, though. That's probably because it stretches the definition of 'a burger'. Instead of a bread bun, each filling is surrounded by large bits of shredded lettuce. The 'natsumi' kanji (菜摘) roughly mean 'greens' and 'clipped/plucked' respectively.

Here's what that looks like:

Isn't that interesting?

MOS at least had the self-respect to not describe these as 'burgers' on the menu. So I ordered the 'MOS natsumi fish' and crossed my fingers.

As you can see in the next pic, the prospect of eating so much lettuce led me to order 2 sides of fries.

(Just kidding. They put 2 portions of fries on my bill, I paid it without realising, and then had to eat them all. It's alright, MOS is always stingy on the fries so it wasn't that many.)

First thing to note about the natsumi burger: on the outside, it's stone cold and slightly damp from condensation. A really strange feeling when you pick it up.

The lettuce is lovingly kept chilled - great at any other time, but not for this. The bits of onion inside were raw and sour. The slice of cheese in the middle hadn't been given a chance to melt.

As a result, the hot patty filling cooled down pretty quickly. By the time I got to the middle, the fish was lukewarm. Knowing the mayo in there was special half-calorie mayo added insult to injury.

I was hoping the lettuce pieces would be thick enough to act as 'buns'. They weren't, they were thin slices and they snapped easily. Even so, all those lettuce layers did too good a job of covering the filling when piled on together. The balance was way off.

It felt like eating a particularly boring salad. (Coming from someone who thinks most salad is boring by default, you know that's bad.)

Verdict: 3/10. Don't want none unless you got buns, hon.
